Lanzarote Cruz Promotes Holiday Island

A good well publicised movie can really have an impact on the location’s tourist industry – and the news that Penelope Cruz had arrived in Lanzarote to film for two weeks was greeted enthusiastically by the Lanzarote holidays industry.

And their enthusiasm is well placed, as they have seen another European holiday island – Malta – benefit from having its locations featured on the big screen, and the Greek island of Kefalonia was made famous by the 2001 film ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ – and Penelope Cruz was the leading actress in that film, with Nicholas Cage co-starring.

Troy, 2004′s blockbuster hit starring Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, introduced the world to Malta. Most of Troy was filmed at Fort Ricasoli. The massive fort was built by the Knights of Malta sometime between 1670 and 1693. Many people around the world would have never had the opportunity to see Fort Ricasoli if producers had decided to use props in a studio.

A Different Loyalty, starring Sharon Stone was shot in Fort St. Elmo in Valletta, Malta in 2004. Fort Saint Elmo divides Marsamxett Harbor and Grand Harbor and provides a grand entrance to both harbors. The fort doubled for the city of Beirut in the movie. The Golden Sands Beach was also chosen as a setting for parts of the movie.

Alexander, starring Colin Farrell, Anthony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie and directed by Oliver Stone included shots from Valletta’s Grand Harbor. Grand Harbor is a natural harbor that has been used at least since the Roman times. The harbor doubled as part of the ancient port city of Alexandria in the movie.

The 1995 pirate movie, Cutthroat Island, with Geena Davis and Matthew Modine was filmed primarily in Vittoriosa. The Maritime Museum is seen multiple times in the film. Mdina, Fort St. Elmo and the Dingli Cliffs were also settings for scenes in the movie. Water tanks were provided by The Mediterranean Film Studio for use in the sea scenes.

A nighttime scene from Gladiator with Russell Crowe was filmed at Couvre Port just outside Vittoriosa. The remainder of the film was primarily shot at a replica of the Roman Coliseum. The replica was built at Fort Ricasoli on Malta.

And Lanzarote could perhaps replicated Malta’s success as it is similar in some ways, but has a different landscape.

Lanzarote, at 37 miles long and 12 miles wide, has much to offer visitors of all ages. Due to the location of the island and volcanic eruptions as recent as the 19th century, people often describe parts of the island as lunar. Some say it gives them the feeling of being in another world – ideal for some films!

Families with small children find this an exciting way to teach their children about the planets and how each area of a planet can differ from others.

The wonderful climate throughout the year is conducive to a variety of sports activities. Take your pick of golf, diving, horseback riding, tennis and windsurfing. And the weather could, like the landscape, help sway decision makers that Lanzarote could be an ideal island for making films.

As for getting to Lanzarote for the stars, Lanzarote is home to more than 100,000 people and has its own international airport.

Penelope Cruz reunites with Sergio on Venuto

Towards the end of last month, Screen International reported that Sergio Castellito and Penelope Cruz are to work together again. Penelope Cruz has apparently told the Italian daily La Repubblica that she would appear in the Italian actor-director’s next venture. The film in question is a movie adaptation of the 2008 Italian novel “Venuto al Mondo”, by Margaret Mazzantini.

The last time Cruz and Castellito worked together was in 2004, in the film “Don’t Move”. That movie was based on another of Mazzantini’s novels called “Non Ti Muovere”. The book had released in 2002, and had fetched the novelist the coveted Strega Prize. On the other hand, “Venuto al Mondo” won the Premio Campiello award in 2009. A Spanish version has already been released, while a French one will hit the bookshelves soon. The English version, however, won’t be available before 2011.

The book tells a compelling story of hope and love set against the backdrop of the Balkans conflict of the 90s. The main character is Gemma, a woman who, alongwith her adolescent son, returns to their common roots in Sarajevo.

Cruz was reported as saying that playing the character Gemma would be one of the most important opportunities in her career in films. She also said that although she doesn’t like war stories in general, “Venuto al Mondo” is one war story that moved her to the extent that it hurt. The actress read the Spanish version of the book, sent to her by her Castellito and Mazzantini, who are married to each other.

Meanwhile, the Rome-based The New Agency (TNA), which represents Castellito, confirmed that the director has indeed initiated the pre-production process for a new film and is currently adapting the screenplay together with his wife. The film would be produced by Castellito’s own company, Alien. Financing details have not yet been finalized and shooting is not expected to begin before 2011.

In the meantime, Cruz will be wrapping up the fourth chapter of the Pirates of the Caribbean series and then taking a break to prepare herself for playing Gemma..

Brown-haired Penelope Cruz and Her Fashion

We all know how classy and beautiful long flowing brunette hair is. You can put it up in a bun to go for an elegant and sophisticated look, or you can pull it back by a ponytail if you’re going for a playful mood, or maybe make a braid if you want a casual elegance to your style.

One celebrity with beautiful long brown hair would be Penelope Cruz. Many say that Penelope Cruz is flawless on the red carpet. And thoug her everyday fashion can be classified as classic euro-chic. the looks she creates on the red carpet has always been of high glamour. She has been dressed by the best designers in the industry like Ralph Lauren, Oscar dela Renta, Chanel and John Galliano.

With her beautiful brown hair, she has always been seen with a unique flair for the dramatic. Her gowns were usually floor-length, solidly colored and strapless or with a plunging neckline.

Just like Penelope Cruz, here are some tips on what different great styles complement long brown hair. Brunettes need to choose earth tones, because it goes well complementing whatever undertones or highlights you have in your hair. For example, if you are more on the golden side, then get a golden base with browns in them.

Of course, brunettes have to remember to look very professional during work days and job interviews, so I suggest a feminine shirt layered with your favorite tailored suit. If you are wearing your hair on top of your head in a bun, add a girly touch like pale pink camisole with lace, so as not to look like a gaudy librarian.

During casual days, wear a skirt and a silk shirt, or even some dress pants that are of matching colors. You can wear your hair in a braid, which makes you look sophisticated, yet fun and still a hint of gentle softness.

On a night out with your girlfriends, you can tie your hair up in a fancy do, or just a ponytail and wear a short skirt with a cute tank top. If you want to wear a more daring top, then pair it with a comfortable pair of jeans.

Never forget about accessories. Because they can make or break one’s outfit. Because you are a brunette, silver and gold colors are your best bet.

How Penelope Cruz Leverages Her Fear to Create Mastery

Copyright (c) 2009 Valery Satterwhite

“When I start a movie, the first day, I feel like a duck.” – Penelope Cruz, Academy Award Winning Actor

Penelope Cruz makes no secret that she’s terrified when she embarks on a new project, a new role. Inner thoughts of not being talented enough and anxiety over the sureness that she will be fired for one reason or another engulfs her mind as she prepares for those first few days on the set. While there is the occasional thespian who musters the temerity confidently to embody a character at the onset, Cruz is certainly not alone among actors who begin insecure and fearful they may not be able to deliver the performance the Director is looking for.

Fear and panic are not great external forces; they are powerful internal ones, generated deep in the part of the brain that is home to what I playfully call the Inner Critic. The Inner Critic is that egoic part of you that means well, wants to keep you safe, yet is woefully misguided. Preferring to keep you secure in your current comfort zone it will block you from stretching into the unknown. Every time you choose safety you reinforce what you terrifies you.

Unfortunately many talented people in every creative endeavor freeze and succumb to their fears. They Find Excuses And Reasons (F.E.A.R.) not to take on challenges, quit or hold back on the fullest expression of their creation. Have you ever faced an opportunity you wanted, perhaps even longed for, but were afraid? What went through your head at the time? Did allow your fear to hold you back or did you harness and leverage your fear to propel you forward beyond fear and into performance mastery?

Actors like Cruz acknowledge their inner fear and trepidation as they turn and focus that energy into their creation. As a committed actor, acting is more important to Cruz than giving in to her fear. Like an alchemist, she turns that fear into courage to push herself to even higher levels of excellence with each performance.

“I haven’t lost the normal fear and insecurity that comes with acting, and I don’t want to lose it. Every time a project starts, it feels like the first time. You have all these experiences that have been accumulating, yes, but it’s still new, still fresh, and I love all of those feelings, all of them. Especially the fear. Because I need that fear. I use it as fuel.” – Penelope Cruz

If you surrender to your fear, let it overpower you, you destroy the creative passion that burns within you. If you try to suppress your fear, tension will build and become blocked impulses, responses, emotions and thoughts. This is the death knell for an actor.

If you acknowledge your fear and release that depth of emotion into your performance, into your art, into whatever it is you what to bring forth into this world you will experience a life-affirming richness of fulfillment. You fear will disappear as you embracing the foreboding nightmare and mindfully step through it with every fiber of your being. There is nothing more thrilling and exhilarating than the fullest expression of your creative potential.

“Ultimately we know deeply that the other side of every fear is a freedom.” – Marilyn Ferguson, American author, editor and public speaker

Hot Sexy Se?orita Penelope Cruz

Sensual and erotic. Two words that best describe Spanish actress Penelope Cruz. Originally a dancer, she soon moved into Spanish television, and since then appeared in a string of films in Spanish, English, French, Italian, and Portuguese languages.

The 33-year old hot and sexy actress first achieved fame when she appeared in a music video for a Spanish synthpop group. She then became a television presenter and had early exposure in a French erotic tv serial, Serie Rose.

In 1992 came hot and sexy Penelope’s film debut, appearing in Jamon, jamon and the Academy Award-winning foreign language film, Belle Epoque. She made her Hollywood debut in All the Pretty Horses in 2000 and had her first Hollywood lead role the same year in the fantasy romantic comedy, Woman on Top.

Penelope became the target of media tabloids in 2001 when she appeared in Vanilla Sky (a remake of her 1997 film Abre los ojos) and began a highly-publicized affair with Tom Cruise, which lasted for three years. The hot and sexy actress also dated her Sahara co-star Matthew McConaughey from 2005 to 2006. Currently, she is dating Spanish Academy Award-winning No Country for Old Men actor Javier Bardem, her co-star in the upcoming Woody Allen film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

In 2006, Penelope received highly favourable reviews when she starred in Volver. She won a Best Actress ensemble award at the Cannes Film Festival and has been nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and BAFTA Award. She holds the record for being the first Spanish actress to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.

Penelope Cruz Comes Home to Film New Movie

Penelope Cruz Comes Home to Film New Movie

Spanish-born actress Penelope Cruz was recently photographed arriving on the island of Lanzarote. This sun-soaked tourism paradise will provide the backdrop for Cruz’s latest movie. Few details have been released about “Los Abrazos Rotos” (“The Broken Embrace”). In fact, exact locations for filming had not even been finalized upon the crew’s arrival in Lanzarote. It is tentatively set for release in Spain in 2009.

The movie is written and directed by Spain’s own Pedro Almodovar. Almodovar seems to be smitten with Penelope Cruz, at least for her talent. Almodovar is openly gay, but maintains a close friendship with Cruz. The two are often seen together in public, especially when working together. He has directed Cruz in a number of other films, including “All About My Mother” (1999) and “Volver” (2006). Her portrayal of a mother dealing with a teenage daughter’s crisis in “Volver” led to Cruz’s nomination for a “Best Actress” Oscar. Cruz was the first Spanish actress ever to receive such an honor. Their long history and ability to mesh undoubtedly led Almodovar to invite Cruz to star in his latest project, “Los Abrazoz Rotos.”

Work began immediately upon the crew’s arrival on Lanzarote on May 25, 2008. The first order of business: scouting film locations. They were spotted just a day later at Lanzarote’s famous Guatiza Cactus Garden. The area was highly guarded and Cruz shielded from the public. Time will tell if the trademark windmill of Jardin de Cactus makes a guest appearance in “Los Abrazos Rotos.” The film will likely contain some aerial shots of the area since film crews were spotted in a helicopter overhead.

Penelope Cruz has starred in a number of American films. Some of her U.S. credits include “All the Pretty Horses” (2000), “Blow” (2001) and “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” (2001). Cruz won an Italian Academy Award for her performance in the 2005 film “Don’t Move.”

Born in Madrid, Spain in 1974, Cruz spent the early years of her life devoted to another art. She studied ballet until the age of 15. It was at the tender age of 17 that she was cast in her first film “Jamon Jamon” under Spanish director Bigas Luna. Within just a few years she caught the attention of Pedro Almodovar. Since that time, she has earned a special place in his heart and his movies.

Penelope Cruz has more than just a beautiful face and acting talent going for her. Cruz is known by her colleagues for her strong drive and work ethic. She is also hailed for her compassion and generosity. She spent a week volunteering in Calcutta at Mother Theresa’s children’s sanctuary. She later donated her entire salary from the movie “The Hi Lo Country” to the sanctuary. Cruz is also an outspoken opponent of the intrusive and invasive practices of the paparazzi.

Cruz appeared to be happy to be working in Spain again. Though Lanzarote is miles from her hometown, Spain holds a special place in her heart. Altogether the film crew spent about two weeks on sunny Lanzarote. “Los Abrazos Rotos” is scheduled for its American release in late 2009, about eight months after its Spanish debut. Between coming home and working with her favorite director, Cruz’s newest movie may be her best yet.
