As the nation’s sweetheart, Cheryl Cole is rarely seen to put a foot wrong or have a hair out of place. But the X Factor judge suffered a bad hair day recently after fans accused her of misleading them in a national publicity campaign for hair care brand L’Oreal. Media relations have since proven vital in combating the unwanted publicity storm surrounding the campaign for the new Elvive Full Restore 5 range after it emerged that Cole sported hair extensions for the TV commercial to give her hair more volume and bounce. Fans were outraged that their favourite star could dupe them in this way; after all, it would prove almost impossible for buyers to achieve the same full-bodied look out of a bottle.
L’Oreal has faced considerable criticism over fakery in its advertising in the not so distant past. In 2007, the company was condemned for producing ‘misleading’ mascara adverts featuring Penelope Cruz. The TV and magazine adverts claimed that women could have up to 60 per cent longer eyelashes with its Telescopic mascara. It later emerged that Cruz was wearing individual false eyelashes in the ads for Telescopic, and the company was forced to include disclaimers during its advertisements making such issues clear.
The public rely on honest and straightforward communication, which L’Oreal claimed to have adhered to by including such a disclaimer during the Elvive Full Restore 5 advert stating that Cole’s hair was “styled with some natural extensions”, however consumers complained that this was insufficient as the message only remains onscreen for two seconds of its 30-second duration. The Advertising Standards Agency rejected 13 complaints that the ads were misleading because the message regarding Cole’s extensions was “clear and legible”.
It is the job of public relations experts to carefully manage such scenarios without letting the situation get out of hand and damage the brand’s reputation. A good PR agency proved essential for restoring public confidence in L’Oreal. Although the initial damage had already been done, it was still possible to turn around the fortunes of the new range by successfully communicating what has since been done to improve the situation. Cole’s constant presence in the national press ensured that once she had removed her hair extensions, photos of her perfectly styled shorter locks were top of the news agenda. L’Oreal and Cole were off the hook thanks to effective crisis management.
Cole was clearly picked to promote the range for her celebrity status rather than her naturally luscious locks. Many question why advertisers no longer choose models to market their products who are naturally blessed with the attribute their product supposedly enhances. Showing off what a product can do for average consumers is a marketing technique which worked wonders for Dove with its Campaign for Real Beauty, dedicated to “creating thought provoking ads, confidence-building programmes, and messages that embrace all definitions of beauty”. This could lend L’Oreal more credibility, but probably wouldn’t have the same impact on sales and doesn’t match the brand’s glamorous image. Instead, people are fooled into believing that buying L’Oreal products will make them look like Beyonce Knowles or Eva Longoria.
Despite the negative publicity, with Cole as global brand ambassador for Elvive Full Restore 5, there was next to no chance of it failing. Value sales of the new range, which were about 10,000 at the start of September, reached upwards of 250,000 by the end of November – the height of the controversy – effectively demonstrating the power of celebrity endorsement. What was an intelligent PR move by Cole was an equally smart marketing move by L’Oreal.
Wow there were some fantastic dresses at this year’s Oscars and what a variety! There were a lot of fairy tale ball gowns on display, but also some shorter cocktail styles, vintage and “goddess” dresses. As usual some celebrities were spot on and others didn’t fare so well.
I will start with the winner of Best Actress, Kate Winslet. She certainly deserved the award and she is such a beautiful woman, she looks pretty good in most things but I was disappointed to see her in black….again! Not only was the dress unflattering in colour, it was also not great in style for Kate. I have seen her looking so much better, what a pity she was so ill advised on such a momentous occasion.
Marion Cottilard opted for the ball gown with little success. Her dress was over large and black, and although it made her waist look tiny, she look as though she was wearing a tight corset and this was compounded by the expression on her face suggesting that she could barely breath! In contrast Penelope Cruz really did look fabulous in her cream, lacy number whose only downside was that it did look a bit like a wedding dress. However Penelope somehow carried it off and she did look lovely.
Beyonce Knowles has a lovely curvy figure and the dress she wore should have suited her but somehow it didn’t quite work. The fabric was too heavy and the pattern too big, thus giving her the appearance of greater width than she really is. A more fluid fabric and a smaller pattern would have made all the difference.
Freida Pinto looked gorgeous in her dress (although I think she would have been better in a “warmer” blue). She was right on trend with the asymmetric neckline and the combination of beading and the fluidity of the dress suggested a mix of western and eastern styles which was so appropriate.
Marisa Tomei looked fantastic in the shapely white dress she was wearing; I just think she could have gone for some colour to really accentuate her colouring. White is a colour that Marisa can wear but how much better she could have looked if her dress had been a clear red, purple or turquoise. Her natural colouring needs some strength of colour to really flatter her beauty. The shape was elegant yet showy and displayed her slim and shapely figure to great effect. I would give her first prize.

Jewelry – 2007 Oscar Earrings, The All Important Item Of Jewelry
Why are earrings the most important item of jewelry? By important I mean the piece of jewelry that will do the most for your appearance. As with all jewelry it should blend with your overall attraction. You don’t want the first comment to be about your great jewelry and then you come in second. Your overall look is what needs to be fabulous, then after the comments of how stunning you look, they can notice your cool jewelry. Later we will look at what style of earrings the stars wore to the Oscars.
Earrings are what frames your face, along with hair, if the colour and style of your earrings are right they will be like two spotlights adding a glow to your face, making it brighter and more alive. Earrings with a decoration on the front of the post, covering the pierced hole, has the reflected light starting from the right point. Earrings with a shepherd hook usually start from a lower aspect and part of the effect can be lost. Also with the shepherd hook if the earring is heavy it shows up the drag on the lobe, these earrings are probably better suited for lighter more casual wear.
Looking at the Oscars 2007. On the Red Carpet almost all of the earrings that the stars wore were decorated from the front of the post, very few were shepherd hook earrings. Most earrings at the Oscars were quite elaborate but not overly so. Some like Nicole Kidman only wore tiny studs. I only saw one star, where the first thing that stood out was her jewelry, the rest were very tasteful.
More Earrings from the Oscars 2007 Cate Blanchett – black stone on the lobe with a larger stone dropped from the first Emily Blunt – Stud earrings Gwyneth Paltrow – Stone on the lobe with a large elaborate diamond shaped drop
Helen Mirren - Medium button style Jennifer Hudson – Long drop earring with the piercing covered Jennifer Lopez - Long drop earring with the piercing covered Nicole Kidman - Tiny stud Penelope Cruz – Large flower shaped button style Portia de Rossi – A short drop from a smaller stone on the lobe Jada Pinkett Smith – Large diamond shaped drop from a covered piercing Maggie Gyllenhaal – A medium retro hoop with a filigree decorated boat at the bottom of the hoop – piercing was exposed Rachel Weisz – Stud earring Kate Winslett - an elaborate button style
My vote goes to Penelope Cruz for making her earrings work for her, there are some photos on my Blog, the link is below, go and make your choice, leave your comment.
Earrings have a long history and date back to the earliest of times. From ancient countries the earrings recovered have nearly all been a variation of the hoop earring, a style that has remained popular to this day. In Cyprus, from the middle of the 2nd Millennium BC, the popular earrings were painted terracotta in the form of stylized nude females. Earlobes were pierced 2 or 3 times and large terracotta hoops suspended from them.
In Ancient Egypt jewels were an important part of the culture, worn by men, women and children. They also used jewelry to adorn statues. There were various hoop styles among the earrings. Earlobe piercing was evident, and the wearing of very heavy earrings from an early age caused the earlobes to be extremely elongated and deformed.
From the late 4th Century BC, earrings were becoming more elaborate in design. The earrings often had suspended pendants and chains. Filigree, granulation, leaf, rosettes and doves were all used to decorate the boat or lower half of the hoop.
During the Middle Ages and the Renaissance earrings were in decline due to the fashion of high collars and a headdress that often covered the ears. It was not until centuries later, about the 1530s that earrings began to emerge again, this was again due to the change in hair and headdress styles. The newly emerging earrings were in the form of plain gold hoops with a pearl drop.
Then in the 17th century earrings started to make a real comeback. By the middle of the 17th century earrings were an essential item. The designs became more complex and interesting. They used ruby, pearls, emeralds and enamel in floral motifs.
18th and 19th centuries saw beautiful and elaborate designs, often using semi-precious stones. They also used diamonds and pearls and very intricate goldsmith techniques.
Early in the 20th century around 1910 to 1930 Art Deco style was popular. At this time ear piercing began to be thought of as barbaric, and clamping earrings to the earlobe with a screw fitting became popular.
1947 saw the feminine new look by Dior. This set the scene for earring design to come to the fore in a new and creative way.
In the 1970s earring design become larger and more varied. The ever popular hoops were back in demand, with many of the hoops decorated with precious gemstones.
In the late 1970s ear piercing started to make a comeback and was popular again. This trend has continued up until today when almost every woman, a large number of men and children have their earlobes pierced once or many times.
Now, as seen at the Oscars, styles are very diverse from studs to shoulder dusters. Fortunately for us we do not have to pay as much for beautiful earrings as the stars do. With today’s technology the quality of man-made gemstones is very good. Resulting in beautiful and much more economical earrings, and other jewelry. Good quality inexpensive jewelry can look as good as the expensive items. For example the cubic zirconia which is made from minerals, resembles the much more expensive diamond. Cubic zirconia is not quite as hard as a diamond but it can be cut and faceted in the same beautiful designs that a diamond can be cut in. Cubic zirconia can be colored to resemble ruby, emerald, sapphire or any other stone. Another cost cutting technique is to quality plate Sterling Silver with 18k Gold. This gives the benefits of gold at a Sterling Silver price. The choice is yours, try all styles and see which does the best for you. Enjoy your earrings and look fabulous.

What are some of the best movies now playing on satellite premium TV? Here are a few you might have missed.
Changeling
This Clint Eastwood-directed drama went largely unnoticed until Oscar season, when Angelina Jolie scored her second Academy Award nomination for playing Christine Collins, a mother in grief. However, don’t fear that this sad story is another Lifetime movie of the week. There is true horror and disturbing emotional elements to be found in Changeling. For one thing, you have the bizarre and disturbing plotline to follow: Christine Collins loses her child for a time, only to be given a duplicate child to adopt, with the assurance that the boy is indeed her son. The physical features are completely different, but the LAPD commands Collins to accept this “gift” and remain silent about her suspicions. Intense drama aside, the best performance in the film is given by Jason Butler Harner as serial killer Gordon Stewart Northcott. We usually expect a serial killer character to be menacing and inhuman. Northcott is something else-a mentally oblivious man-possibly mentally ill-and one that dares to evoke pity from an audience who already knows the truth. Changeling is not an easy film to watch but it was one of 2008′s most memorable movies. It is currently playing on satellite TV PPV.
Saw V
Like a blood-soaked devil spawn, Saw is one of the best horror franchises to come out of Hollywood, and much to the chagrin of some, this beast has multiplied four sequels to the original. What truly set Saw apart from the competition was the psychological aspects of its horror. There was some gore as modern audiences have come to expect, but not as much as you would expect to see. Nevertheless, the terror is real. Saw V continues the franchise and emphasizes the big plot twist in its tagline: You won’t believe how it ends. Saw V is playing on satellite TV Pay-Per-View and you don’t have to saw anything off to watch it-just click a button!
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Vicky Cristina Barcelona is Woody Allen’s newest film, and is continuing Allen’s trend of stressing sexy drama over neurotic comedy, though in this film there seems to be plenty of everything. The film stars Javier Barden, Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson. The plot centers on two American women staying in Barcelona. They soon meet an artist who is attracted to both of them (you know those Europeans…oh wait, that’s all men in general). The plot becomes complicated as you realize that artist Juan is still involved with his unstable ex-wife. The plot comes to a realistic if not necessarily predictable end. As you may know, Penelope Cruz won Best Supporting Actress for her work in Vicky Cristina Barcelona at the 2009 Academy Awards.
These are just some of the movies-the best movies-currently playing on satellite TV Pay-Per-View. See them uncut, commercial free and for a price much less than DVD or Blu-Ray.
If you want the best TV programming available, go with Direct TV. It’s the leader in satellite television services in the U.S. No matter whether you prefer movies, sports or family TV shows, there are Direct TV packages to satisfy every member of your household.

Let’s just start by saying this: Nine is one of the best of 2009. Not to be confused with District 9 and 9, Rob Marshall does a splendid job bringing the Broadway musical of the same title to the screen. The whole main cast is great at acting as well as singing. The movie is also an adaptation of Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2 and it’s a nice homage to that as well.
My only criticism of Nine is that it has a very loose plot. The small plot that is present is still quite good. It follows Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), an aging director who has reached a breaking point in his life when he realizes everything is spiraling out of control. His movies have turned bad over the last few years and he is hopelessly in love with nine women who very important to him. The female cast includes his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his costume designer (Judi Dench), a prostitute from his childhood (Fergie), an American fashion designer (Kate Hudson), his muse (Nicole Kidman), and his mother (Sophia Loren). The film also marks one of Anthony Minghella’s last screenplays.
Though the cast is mostly responsible for why the movie is so great, it’s also Rob Marshall’s direction. Anyone who has seen Chicago will know that his type of movie involves sexy women writhing and twisting as the dance (and not in a bad way). Nine is quite similar, but Nine made me feel as though I was actually sitting in a Broadway theater watching a Broadway musical. Anthony Minghella’s snappy script, the art direction, and the cinematography are just some of the things that make Nine such a sensory overload. Marshall also even brings the cast out at the end for bows.
The most important thing in movie musicals is the singing and dancing. Nobody needs to be worried about these things in Nine. Every cast member sings and dances beautifully with the exception of Kate Hudson whose voice is unfortunately changed for the trailer. Daniel Day-Lewis is a surprisingly good singer and dances pretty nicely too. The two great numbers are “Be Italian” and “A Call to the Vatican”. Fergie totally rocks her number in which she plays an overweight prostitute and Penelope Cruz blew me away with her sexy number involving a striptease. Yet it really is Marion Cotillard who “takes it all” (no pun intended). I’ve been watching Marion Cotillard since she first starred in La Vie En Rose and it’s fortunate that she’s finally begun to star in big movies. Hopefully she’ll get more recognition now.
The bottom line is Nine is great. Though the film does get a bit tiresome midway through, the songs are energetic and make you remember why you love it. Rob Marshall does a great job directing his stars and the art direction and cinematography are sure to win some awards. Every actor who is part of the main cast sings well and the choreography is very nice. Rob Marshall has done it again with Nine and I totally look forward to seeing it take home awards on Oscar night.
